Charles McClung, a trumpet player who had at one time played with one of John Philip Sousa's bands in Chicago, became the Belle Fourche High School band instructor in 1928. He was also the director of the municipal band, and he was urged to go before the Chamber of Commerce in 1931 to get financial support, for the band. The proposal was accepted and this original 26 member band went on to build a wonderful reputation in their home state of South Dakota and Wyoming, Montana and as far as Colorado. Charlie directed the band until 1946 when his vision failed.
